ANKARA - In response to a question regarding the withdrawal of US soldiers from northern Syria ahead of a possible cross-border military operation by Turkey, Kremlin Spokesperson Peskov has said, “No, no one informed us.”

 

US President Donald Trump posted a series of tweets yesterday (October 7) and announced that 50 US soldiers had withdrawn from northern Syria ahead of a possible cross-border military operation by Turkey.

 

At his daily press release today, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was asked whether Russia was informed beforehand about the issue.

 

As reported by Sputnik news agency, Peskov said, "No, no one informed us" and stated the following in brief:

 

"We don't know yet which soldiers have withdrawn, how many of them have withdrawn or whether they have withdrawn or not.

 

"As you know, unconfirmed statements have come from around the world regarding the withdrawal of soldiers.

 

"Therefore, we are very closely watching the situation."

 

Peskov also indicated that President of Russia Vladimir Putin did not get in contact with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan or US President Donald Trump about the latest developments in Syria.

 

Peskov added that Putin and Erdoğan did not talk about the operation yesterday. "There was no contact between the leaders about this issue", Peskov said and added, "As you know the contacts between Russia and Turkey are generally at the military and special service levels.These contacts are very high in number and continue regularly"
