ANKARA - Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür has warned that “earthquakes above 7 are expected between Erzincan and Karlıova” following yesterday's earthquake.
Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür commented on yesterday's 4.2-magnitude earthquake in Kanîreş (Karlıova) district of Çewlîg (Bingöl) province. Görür, who participated in a television program, warned of an earthquake above 7, saying, “It was the last straw.”
Görür said the earthquake is “annoying” because of the North Anatolian Fault and East Anatolian Fault lines in the region. Informing that Kanîreş is the intersection point of 2 fault lines, “An earthquake above 7 is expected between Erzincan-Karlıova” Görür warned.
'AN EARTHQUAKE OVER 4 TROUBLES US'
Görür noted the following: “It is difficult to say that the earthquake is a harbinger of anything. The mechanism of these earthquakes is very specific and simple. When a certain amount of energy accumulates in a fault, if there is a block that prevents the movement of the blocks, it breaks it and produces an earthquake. Every earthquake is important, but they don't attract much attention from the public unless they are 5 or above. There is no destruction. Damage can be seen. An earthquake like 4.1, 4.2 in Karlıova bothers us.”
