Tahir Elçi Human Rights Foundation's 2nd Human Rights and Freedom Award was given to Saturday Mothers at a ceremony held in Ankara yesterday. Many people attended the award ceremony held at Taşdelen Contemporary Arts Center.
Speaking at the opening of the award ceremony, Tahir Elçi's wife, CHP Istanbul Deputy Türkan Elçi, said: "Tahir inherited the legacy of a lawyer who devoted almost all of his professional life to human rights and the fight against impunity, and who struggled for the construction of an order dominated by law and justice, with an anti-war and non-violent society imagination. Elçi Foundation deemed it worthy to give this year's award to Saturday Mothers."
Former CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu gave the Human Rights and Freedom Award to the Saturday Mothers. Kılıçdaroğlu said: "Human history is full of pain, but the fact that a human faced injustice and gave his life is an event that people must not forget. This is how we lost Tahir Elçi. The perpetrator has still not been found. Saturday Mothers is an event that each of us, as human beings, should think about one by one and share their pain. They don't want much, actually, they want to know where their children are. They want to go to their graves and pray."
Kılıçdaroğlu said: "For a state, an unsolved incident is the biggest shame of that state. A state must definitely get rid of this shame. If we defend democracy and human rights and value people, we must save the state from this shame. The way to achieve this is through struggle.
