AMED - Bahar Karakaş Uluğ, the dismissed HDP city council member, was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison. The court decided to deprive Uluğ of custody of his children.

Bahar Karakaş Uluğ, who was elected to Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Council from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and was dismissed with the appointment of a trustee, was held at the 11th High Criminal Court in Diyarbakır. His lawyer Yusuf Çakas was present at the hearing, where Uluğ was connected via Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from İzmir Women's Closed Prison.

The prosecution, which submitted its opinion on the merits to the court, claimed that the 22 actions and activities Uluğ participated in turned into "organization propaganda" and that he participated in these actions upon the call of "organization-related" broadcasting organizations. The prosecution demanded a prison sentence that Uluğ was accused of "being a member in a terrorist organization", claiming that Uluğ made a statement to the press as an activist of the Free Women's Movement (Tevgera Jinên Azad -TJA) and that she is a member of the Rosa Women's Association, that TJA and the Rosa Women's Association are "KCK social structure" organizations.

Uluğ stated that she is a member of the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Council, that she is not a member of the Rosa Women's Association, and that the actions and events she participated in were allowed by the governor's office.

ACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES ARE WITHIN THE SCOPE OF POLITICS

Uluğ's lawyer Yusuf Çakas stated that all of the actions and activities that his client participated in were political party activities, and demanded his client's acquittal, stating that the actions and activities his client participated in did not meet the criteria of "diversity, intensity, continuity" determined as the criteria for "membership in a terrorist organization".

DECISION ANNOUNCED

The court ruled that Uluğ be sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison for "being a member of a terrorist organization" and deprived her of the custody of her children until the execution of her prison sentence is completed. Along with the verdict, the court released Uluğ with a judicial control measure.
