111 journalists stood trial for 1,817 years in prison

ANKARA - The Cost of Journalism announced that in November 111 journalists stood trial with a request of a total of 1.817 years in prison and 5 journalists were sentenced to a total of 6 years, 4 months and 12 days in prison and a fine of 16 thousand TL.

The November report, prepared within the scope of the Cost of Journalism project, carried out with the support of the Journalists' Association, has been announced. In the report, which draws attention to the fact pressure and obstruction against journalists continues, it was stated that journalists were tried in 40 different hearings in 10 different cities in a one-month period.
 
111 JOURNALISTS APPEARED IN COURT
 
According to the report, at least 111 journalists and media workers appeared in court in a one-month period. In these ongoing cases, a total of 1.817 years prison sentence was requested for 111 journalists along with a judicial fine of up to 35 thousand days. A fine of 40 thousand TL and a non-pecuniary damage of 2 million 100 thousand TL were requested for 4 journalists.
 
6 YEARS PRISON SENTENCE FOR 5 JOURNALISTS
 
5 journalists were sentenced to a total of 6 years, 4 months and 12 days in prison and were fined 16 thousand TL. 8 journalists were acquitted.
 
According to the data in the report, most of the journalists were charged under the Anti-Terror Law. 55 journalists and media workers on trial were prosecuted on charges of "being a member of a terrorist organization" and 16 on charges of "Propagandizing a terrorist organization". 7 journalists were charged with "Insulting the president".
 
In November, a lawsuit was filed against 4 journalists, demanding prison sentences ranging from 11 years and eight months to 25 years and eight months. In the same period, a criminal complaint was filed against a journalist. 4 journalists were detained, 3 of them during news follow-up.
