Türkay rejects ankle monitors on grounds that it symbolizes slavery

İSTANBUL - Not recognizing the decision of the court, HDP Kadıköy District Executive Koray Türkay rejected the ankle monitor on grounds that it symbolizes slavery.
 
Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Kadıköy District Executive Koray Türkay who participated in the protests against Melih Bulu, appointed as a trustee rector to Boğaziçi University in Kadıköy on February 2, was sentenced to house arrest by the court on grounds that he violated the law on meetings and demonstrations. Recalling that he was in prison for 4 months in 2018, Türkay said he was acquitted from that same case.
 
Not recognizing the decision of the court, Türkay told the police who wanted to place the ankle monitor in his ankle, he won't accept the ankle monitor and told that he expected to be arrested soon.
 
VIOLATION OF PRIVACY
 
Underlining that house arrest and ankle monitors are inhumane punishments, Türkay said: "People tend to think that house arrest is better than prison. I don't. You can exercise in prison, see people etc. But in house arrest, you can't get out if you don't have a balcony. They place a device in your house and listen everything inside. They turn our houses in prisons. This is a violation of privacy."
 
SHACKLES
 
Defining the ankle monitor as shackles, Türkay said it symbolizes slavery. Türkay said: "TThis is the same relationship between the slave and their masters. They tell you they still can have slaves, they are that mighty. We are forced to get used to these things. This is a darkness that tries to bring back the darkness of a thousand years ago. It will not work."
 
'I REJECT THESE SHACKLES'
 
Because house arrest is a crime and I won't let this crime to be committed, I won't wear these shackles. The judges commit crimes by the hand of the government. Those who are at the top of the government may run when they lose in order not to be held to account but this many law enforcement personnel and judges and prosecutor's won't be able to run. They will be here. We are here despite all pressure. We are willing to pay a price for the struggle for democracy. Today, those who commit crimes should not think that their crime will go unpunished. All of them will stand trial, they will be accountable. "
 
'WE CAN ORGANIZE'
 
Türkay said: "We have many friends wearing these ankle monitors right now and they keep fighting back from their homes. We can organize against this thing."
