DEM Party Co-Chairs reacts to attack in Parliament 2024-08-16 16:22:00   ANKARA - Reacting to the attack in Parliament, DEM Party Co-Chairs Tuncer Bakırhan and Tulay Hatimoğulları described the attack as “political thuggery and gangsterism.”    Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-Chairs Tuncer Bakırhan and Tülay Hatimoğulları reacted to the attack of AKP members against DEM Party Group Deputy Chairs with a written statement.   'POLITICAL BANDITRY'   Describing the attack as political thuggery, the Co-Chairs said: “As opposition parties, we called for an extraordinary meeting of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to implement the Constitutional Court's ruling ordering the return of Dear Can Atalay's parliamentary seat. Although the Constitutional Court's ruling is clear, the AKP-MHP government wants to continue its attitude of not recognizing rights-laws under the roof of the parliament. Unable to digest the opposition's call for an extraordinary meeting of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the government found the solution in attacks amounting to physical violence. The attacks on our women MPs by AKP male MPs is political thuggery. These attacks are not recognizing the will of the people, the law and are political impotence. None of our friends, especially our Deputy Group Chair, will back down in the face of these attacks.”    'IT IS ROBBERY'   The statement continued as follows: “The AKP-MHP government, which attacks social groups opposing the government in the most violent way outside the parliament, is trying to carry this attitude into the parliament. The government, which gave the order to attack social groups defending life, human beings, democracy, law and nature in the streets and squares with a lawless gangsterism and bullying, has carried this to the Parliament through its MPs. AKP members attacked opposition MPs on the floor of the parliament in order to silence the voice of the opposition and to continue the lawlessness during the meeting for the return of Can Atalay's parliamentary seat. We declare once again to the public that we will resist the AKP in the strongest way against the AKP, which wants to establish the law of violence and aggression in parliament. We condemn in the strongest terms this understanding that wants to maintain the regime of injustice and lawlessness by attacking opposition MPs. Whatever the cost, we will continue to defend democracy, justice and peace in our just cause without stopping for a moment.”
